Hebei University of Technology was formerly known as the Beiyang Technology School founded in 1903, and then successively changed its name to Zhili Higher Industrial School, Zhili Higher Industrial School, Zhili Public Industrial Technical School, Hebei Provincial Industrial Technical School, Hebei Provincial Industrial College, Hebei Provincial Institute of Technology and Hebei Institute of Technology merged with Beiyang University to form Tianjin University in 1951, restored and rebuilt in 1958, and merged with Tianjin Institute of Technology in 1962 to form the new Tianjin Institute of Technology. It was renamed Hebei Institute of Technology in 1971 and named in 1995. For Hebei University of Technology.

In 1996, the school was included in the first batch of national "211 Project" key construction universities. In 2014, it was jointly built by the Ministry of Education of the People's Republic of China, Hebei Provincial People's Government and Tianjin Municipal People's Government.
