Established in 1983 with the approval of the Ministry of Education, Shenzhen University shoulders the glorious mission of cultivating talents for the special zone and exploring the way for national higher education reform. The central government, the Ministry of Education and the local government attach great importance to the construction of Shenzhen University, and organize Peking University to build Chinese and foreign language disciplines, Tsinghua University to build electronics and architecture disciplines, and the National People’s Congress to build economics and law disciplines. A large number of well-known scholars gathered in Shenzhen University. At the beginning of the establishment of the school, the school was determined to reform the management system of colleges and universities, and actively explored scholarships, credit systems, work-study programs, etc., and took the lead in implementing the system of non-inclusive distribution and two-way selection for graduates in China, and the implementation of the full employment system for faculty and staff and logistics. Since its establishment 40 years ago, Shenzhen University has adhered to the school motto of "self-reliance, self-discipline, and self-improvement". Shenzhen University currently has 43,190 students, including 28,426 undergraduates, 13,567 postgraduates, 692 doctoral students, and 505 international students; there are 25,671 adult education students. The school’s disciplines are complete and comprehensive, covering 11 disciplines including philosophy, literature, economics, law, education, science, engineering, management, medicine, history, and art. The school initiated the formation of the "Local Universities UOOC Alliance", with 137 affiliated universities, 847 online courses, a total of 766 elective schools, and a cumulative number of electives exceeding 1.75 million.
